Who is Nandi?

Nandi, also known as Nandikeshwara, is revered as the sacred bull and Lord Shiva’s vahanam (divine vehicle). Beyond serving as Shiva’s mount, Nandi is also the esteemed guardian deity of Mount Kailash, Lord Shiva’s heavenly abode.

Nandi is a devoted servant of Shiva and a spiritual teacher. He is regarded as the chief mentor of the eight disciples of the Nandinatha Sampradaya, a significant lineage in Shaivism. These disciples—Sanaka, Sanatana, Sanatkumara, Tirumular, Vyagrapada, Patanjali, and Sivayoga Muni—were instructed by Nandi and sent in eight directions to spread divine wisdom and uphold the teachings of the Shaiva tradition.

According to sacred texts, Nandi possesses profound knowledge of the Agamic and Tantric scriptures. This divine wisdom was imparted to him by Goddess Parvati, the consort of Lord Shiva. With this knowledge, Nandi not only became a custodian of spiritual truths but also a medium through which Shiva’s teachings could reach the world.

Nandi’s position in temples reflects his spiritual significance. He is often enshrined directly opposite the sanctum sanctorum of Shiva temples, symbolizing unwavering devotion and a meditative connection to the divine. Devotees often whisper their prayers into Nandi’s ears, believing that he will relay them directly to Lord Shiva.
